Ever since I read Henry Thoreau’s 19th-century masterpiece” Walden”, that describes his retreat into the woods to see if he could still love life at its most basic, I have longed to try this for myself.
Then I stumbled upon minimalism which is a movement about doing more with less. I have been fascinated by the idea of stripping back life to its very core essentials to test whether life with less stuff, would create more freedom and space to enjoy life more.
Minimalist ideas have already influenced some major choices in life. In truth, the reason I am writing these words and sharing these videos is that I made a massive life choice not to follow the easy path, by leaving the broking business I had co-founded to live what I believe is a more meaningful life.
The timing was perfect. I was at the precipice of making some major life decisions that would have locked me into my broking career to fund these plans. But fortunately, I paused everything and found just enough time to reflect on what’s really important and realised there was an opportunity to do something totally different. To simplify life, which would release enough financial pressure to open the door to a totally new life. Full of meaning and purpose.
I feel incredibly grateful for Thoreau’s wonderful book, and the minimalists showing me that less can mean so much more.
